Marmot has been associated with Dana Design products since the early 1980's. When Marmot started a mail order catalog business back then, it turned to Dana to design and manufacture a unique, single stave, big load pack. The pack lasted much longer than the mail order business. Since 1987, when Dana incorporated his company and sold under his own label, Dana packs have redefined "the big haul". Dana Gleason, the founder of Dana Design, designed innovative "dynamic" frame systems that became the outdoor industry benchmark for greater comfort, increased stability and less stress when carrying large and mid-volume packs. Through the years, the frame systems have been refined, materials improved, and wear-points reinforced. Today, the frame systems are easier to adjust, are lighter weight, flex and transfer loads more efficiently, but remain fundamentally Dana Design.

In 1996, K2 Inc., the parent company of K2 skis and snowboards, acquired Dana Designs. In 2004, K2 Inc. acquired Marmot. In 2005, Dana Designs was merged into Marmot and became part of the Marmot pack line. In 2006, the Dana brand became Marmot, but the essential DNA of the dynamic frame systems designed in 1987 and refined every year since remain inside the Marmot packs.
